Ain’t no loving God gonna understand How you could call out to him and still love a man Who is callous and cruel and hates the poor Kicks them to curb when they’re knocking at the door What you did to the least of these, you did to him Ain’t no loving God gonna understand How you could hold up a Bible and still follow a man Whose only true love is power and money And taking even more from the land of milk and honey Love of money is the root of all evil -Break- Ain’t no loving God gonna understand How you could kneel on Sunday and still stand for a man Who’s never met a lie he didn’t tell Confuses right and wrong with the ability to sell An honest witness does not deceive Ain’t no loving God gonna understand How you can sing out hymns, then sing praises for a man Who thinks kindness is a weakness and sacrifice for fools The bankers are his masters and the working man his tools When he speaks graciously, believe him not -Break- Ain’t no loving God gonna understand How you can pray to be holy, then heap praise on a man Who cheats on his wives and his taxes too Would rather watch you die than look like he could lose His throat’s an open grave, there’s venom on his lips Ain’t no loving God gonna understand How you could go to church and still listen to a man Who stands in the boot on the necks of our brothers And sisters because he considers them “others” You shall love your neighbor as yourself

You claim that you’re the champion Without a shred of proof Say you’re an astronaut While standing on the roof You pretend it didn’t happen While cutting down the noose Speak the language of the coward And think that you are brave Try to sell that you are born again But you’ve done nothing to be saved You sing this land is my land While covering up the graves In the name of freedom Children get gunned down In the name of money The poison seeps into the ground In the name of righteousness The lies come fast and mean In the name of truth You want to wash our history clean In the name of freedom You deny what we have learned In the name of money The world begins to burn In the name of righteousness You turn your back on those in need In the name of truth You see what you want to see Claim that you’re the victim While you’re out there swinging the club Raising up the peace sign While you rile up the mob You haven’t killed our principles You’re just here to finish the job Say you’re a man of the people But the power’s all for you And if it wasn’t for the other guy Everybody’d get theirs too If you tell the big lie long enough Will you believe it too? Tell the truth

Well my dear mum’s advice Was to try to be nice And have good thing to say But I’ve lived too long And I’m not that strong The façade is crumbling away I’ve seen all the ways We’re failing these days I sit here just singing my song Like that one guy said As they kicked him in the head Why can’t we just get along? It’s an endless parade A shouting promenade Somehow they still have the nerve To expect applause Instead of a punch to the jaws Which they all so richly deserve There’s no sense of grace No real safe space To stay away from the madness going on When it’s about to die down Here comes another round Why can’t we just get along? I feel so worn down My body’s giving out From carrying my axes to grind Cause when I’m put to the test I’m no better than the rest I me mine, I me mine, I me mine I’m up on my soapbox Just casting these rocks Off balance, and singing this song For reasons easy to see But hard to believe Why can’t we just get along? I hope you’ll excuse me Because the answers elude me Why can’t we just get along?
